In May 1972, sustained winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour occurred for 16 hours in the vicinity of Kingsley Dam in Nebraska. Ten-foot-tall waves caused significant erosion of the upstream slope of the dam including undermining and failure of 440 feet of the concrete parapet. While the dam did not ultimately fail, downstream residents were evacuated due to concerns about the dam.
