Derek is a Senior Hydraulic and Hydrologic Engineer at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Risk Management Center (RMC). He leads and provides expert advice for numerous flood hazard studies supporting dam and levee safety risk assessments both nationally and internationally. His contributions extend beyond project leadership to include the development and delivery of specialized trainings in these critical areas as well.
Derek has developed complex flood hazard assessments incorporating regional, temporal, and causal information expansion by utilizing and conducting regional precipitation and flow frequency studies, paleoflood analysis, and hydrologic modeling. Additionally, he has developed hydraulic models for dam and levee breach scenarios supporting consequence estimation, as well as detailed 2-dimensional modeling supporting paleoflood analysis. Prior to joining the RMC, Derek gained valuable experience as an Environmental Engineer within USACE and in roadway and associated drainage design at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Derek earned a Bachelor and Master of Science in Civil Engineering, complemented by a certificate in Environmental Engineering from the University of Louisville. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Kentucky.
